Feminism and Disarmament
For 105 years, WILPF has articulated the links between militarism and gender norms such as violent masculinities. Much of the discussion on disarmament perpetuates the highly problematic gender constructions of men who are violent and powerful and women that are vulnerable and need to be protected. Gender perspectives in disarmament, peace, and security must be about exposing and challenging this state of affairs, not about including more women in the existing systems of structural inequalities and violent masculinities. Reaching Critical Will seeks to achieve disarmament, challenge militarism and violence, and confront gender discrimination and normativity, including in our monitoring and reporting on international forums, as well as through research, policy analysis, advocacy, and collaboration with international civil society campaigns. Throughout our work, Reaching Critical Will researches, analyses, and highlights gendered impacts of the use and trade of weapons; gender diversity in disarmament discussions, negotiations, and processes; and gendered perspectives on disarmament and arms control.

Activism

Reaching Critical Will seeks to spread feminist perspectives on weapons, war, and militarism among students, diplomats, academics, and activists. In addition to the writing and speaking outlined above, we also help organise and participate in public events such as the Women’s March and the Women’s March to Ban the Bomb. We are also active supporters of the 16 days of activism against gender violence campaign, held each year, where we highlight the link between arms proliferation, militarism, and gender-based violence, see for examples of our engagement: 2020; 2019; 2016; 2013; 2011. We are also working to hold governments espousing a “feminist foreign policy” to account, and to help those interested in developing such policies to do so in a truly feminist way, such as Canada.
