The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign is an annual international campaign that begins on November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and ends on December 10 (Human Rights Day). The goal of the campaign is to continue to build awareness and advocate for an end to all forms of gender-based violence, and everyone is called on to urge join it.
The 2012 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence Campaign, hosted by the Rutgers School of Arts and Science’s Centre for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL), marks the third year of advocacy on the intersections of gender-based violence and militarism.
The start and end dates of the Campaign are 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Gender-Based Violence, and 10 December, Human Rights Day.
WILPF and this year’s campaign
Last year, we had a historic participation by WILPF Sections in the Campaign. And this year we are of course participating again, on the international and national levels.
WILPF International organized a 16 Days Blog Campaign. Each day it published a new post in the WILPF Journal, taking a close-up of one of the campaign’s three themes. WILPF Sections also took actions at the local and national levels.

During the final session of the UN open-ended working group on nuclear disarmament in Geneva in August, 107 states expressed support for the convening of a conference in 2017 to negotiate a legally-binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination. This proposal formed the key recommendation in the working group’s report, adopted on 19 August with overwhelming support.
The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has prepared an overview of the support indicated for the negotiation of a prohibition treaty, quoting from statements of those that indicated their support for the treaty during the OEWG as well as the tally for the vote on the working group's report.
